Why do you think she had too much influence? Or are we just using our 21st century thinking upon those times?

Heather - good point on using our 21st century thinking. I agree with you on that.
I answered yes on this question because of her mother insisting that Gigi marry a titled man. But, I guess most mothers in that time period would strive for the same for their daughters. Gigi was only around 18 when she married, but she came across more mature then other ladies that we usually read about. (The exception of her maturity, the note).

It was certainly the case that if you could, you married up (and for women I guess it is still the case) to have a good life even though there were many restrictions.
I wonder if people tended avoid historicals because they couldn't get their head around the thinking of the time or there may have been the fatal historical inaccuracies.
It is like the question Sherry asked: Which would you be - the courtesan, the widow or the virgin. Most agreed the widow as there would actually be more freedoms.

In my opinion, Mrs. Rowland did not have to much influence. I think it was more manipulation. Gigi just allowed her to get away with it because she knew her mother, even though heavy-handed , only wanted what was best for her. For Gigi to marry a titled man would have given her security and a standing in society, two very important aspects of that time period. Gigi was strong willed before her marriage and smart which is why ultimately Gigi went along with her mothers insistence on her marriage. Gigi wanted that security as well and saw that with the restrictions placed on women at that time, marriage was her chance to grab that protection in whatever way she could so her mother was right in a way.
However, to me the driving force behind Mrs. Rowland's insistence was that she was trying to assure that Gigi had the life that she never really got through her own marriage.
